The Silk Road emerged like no other marketplace available. This nitch in the dark web was labeled as the “Wild West” was a haven for drug dealers and consumers. This site was founded by Ross Ulbricht, also known as his screen name, Dread Pirate Roberts. This site lasted for only three years, however, the legacy that it imposed has been unstoppable. Ulbricht wanted to create a free market that would be outside the scope of government control. Furthermore, the Silk Road operated on a note of almost complete anonymity. Transactions could only be carried out through the use of Bitcoin to carry out this notion of anonymity, more so than any form of currency or credit could ensure. Ulbricht noted on his LinkedIn profile that he wanted to use “use economic theory as a means to abolish the use of coercion and aggression amongst mankind.”
